Pine changes squirrel behaviour. Pine seed is a real food source and mature pines give squirrels a high route between trees and onto roofs without ever coming to ground. The other thing pine does is drop needles: a roof valley or gutter packed with pine straw holds water against the roof edge, the fascia softens, and softened fascia is where a squirrel starts work.

Squirrels in Forrest County: who does what

Hattiesburg’s animal control is a unit of the police department, and the ordinance it enforces is written around owned animals: running at large, restraint, and the responsibilities of an owner. An animal in your attic has no owner and falls outside that framework entirely. Mississippi handles nuisance wildlife through the state’s permitted operator system instead, which is a private, paid arrangement.

What Mississippi law says about squirrels

Squirrels are game animals in Mississippi: the 2026-27 fall season runs 1 October to 28 February (8 a day) with a spring season from 15 May to 1 June. MDWFP says it generally cannot take on removal problems itself and keeps a list of permitted wildlife trappers. All Mississippi rules →

Signs, and why they matter

  • Fast, light scampering in the attic or wall: loudest at dawn and again before dusk
  • Scratching and persistent gnawing sounds
  • A neat, round hole chewed through fascia, trim or a gable vent
  • Chewed electrical wiring, which is a genuine and documented cause of house fires
  • Chewed plumbing lines and irrigation tubing

How removal works

One-way exclusion doors let squirrels leave and stop them returning, followed by sealing every gnawed opening with steel or hardware cloth. Wood alone gets chewed through again within weeks.

A one-way door lets the animal leave and not return, which is why sealing the hole is the last step, not the first.
